About Loughton
Loughton is one of the oldest settlements in Essex, dating back to 1062 when it was known as Lukintune. It first appears in an Anglo-Saxon charter which granted various estates including what we now know as Debden and Alderton Hall.
Loughton, England had always been a small village until the early 17th century when coaches began to be used for travel. The high road was extended north through Loughton and quickly became one of London’s most important routes. Inns sprung up in order to provide shelter from rain or snow for these travellers as they made their way across the country side on horse back or by carriage with many stopping at this new settlement.
