Cherry picker

There are a few ways to reach windows that need to be cleaned and a popular way is by using a cherry picker. These are particularly useful as they can be transported from place to place quite easily and are not static at one individual place.

The cherry picker as it is commonly known, (but sometimes known as a hydraulic platform or MEWP (mobile elevating work platform) can be transported by loading onto a flat back truck, or some are on a self-moving platform. The bucket on the cherry picker is designed for an individual to stand in and work from. There are normally two sets of controls, one on the base unit and one in the bucket itself for the person working there to be able to manoeuvre it themselves.  There are two types of lift, the stick boom and the articulated lift which is for use in a fairly confined space.

Originally cherry pickers were designed for fruit farmers who worked in orchards picking the fruit from the tops of the trees, thus the name cherry picker. Nowadays a cherry picker is used in many situations! Engineers will use them to reach the top of electrical poles and other utility poles. They are also used on fire engines and for mining, so they have been used widely since their creation for help picking the fruit from the fruit trees.

Professional window cleaners will use a cherry picker to gain access to areas other methods would prevent them from reaching. The will be able to reach in the region of about 80 to 100 metres using a cherry picker.
